It is the biggest of the grey geese in its group. This bird has a bulky body and a long, thick neck. Its feathers are greyish brown with white spots. You can also see an orange or pink beak. Its legs and feet are a bright pink color. These geese are very important because they are the ancestors of most domestic geese.

These birds have a very busy way of life. In the spring, they fly to northern places to breed. They build nests on the ground using grass, moss, and feathers. A female sits on the eggs to keep them warm. This is called incubation, and it lasts about twenty-eight days. Once the chicks hatch, they can leave the nest almost right away. Both parents work together to protect and feed the young family.

People have known about these geese for a very long time. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus described them in 1758. He lived in Sweden and used Latin names for animals. He first called them *Anas anser*. Later, in 1860, a French naturalist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson created a new group for them. Now, they belong to the genus *Anser*. This name comes from the Latin word for goose.

Many birds fly south to warmer areas during the winter. However, some groups stay in the same place all year. In places like southern England, they live in the same area through every season. They like to stay near water, such as marshes, lakes, and rivers.

These geese are very social and love to be in groups. They often fly in huge flocks that have thousands of birds.

Being in a big group helps them stay safe from danger. While some geese eat, others stay alert to watch for predators. They also have very loud voices. They make a cackling sound that sounds like a loud honk. When a male protects his mate, he might make a special "triumph call."
