The sunbittern is a unique bird found in the warm, tropical parts of the Americas.

It lives in humid forests with open spaces near rivers, ponds, or lagoons. This bird is the only member of its own family, called Eurypygidae. It is a very special bird because it has a secret way to protect itself. Most of its body has quiet colors like brown, grey, or black. However, its wings hold a bright surprise for anyone who gets too close.

When a sunbittern feels threatened, it performs a sudden wing display.

It spreads its wings to show large, colorful eyespots. These spots use bright red, yellow, and black colors to look like real eyes. This can startle a predator and give the bird time to get away. Sunbitterns also use these beautiful displays during courtship to find a mate.

This helps them communicate with other birds in the forest.

Scientists have studied how this bird is related to others. It is most similar to a bird called the kagu from New Caledonia. Both birds belong to a group called Eurypygiformes. They also both have powder down, which is a special kind of feather. A fossil found in the Green River Formation of Wyoming shows these birds lived much further north in the past. This fossil is a full skeleton and is the oldest known of its kind.

There are three different types, or subspecies, of sunbittern. The Amazonian sunbittern lives east of the Andes in the Amazon basin. The northern sunbittern lives from southern Guatemala through Central America and western Ecuador. The foothill sunbittern lives along the East Andean slope in Peru. These birds can be found in many places from Guatemala all the way to Brazil. Some have orange-yellow legs, while others have redder bills and legs.

Sunbitterns eat a huge variety of living things to stay healthy. They eat many insects like moths, flies, and dragonflies. They also eat small animals like fish, frogs, and even lizards. One amazing thing is that they can use tools to hunt. In zoos, some birds have been seen using bait to attract prey. This clever behavior helps them catch food that is just out of reach. This makes them very smart hunters in their forest homes.
