Leghorn chicken

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Leghorn is a special kind of chicken from Italy.

These birds come from a place called Tuscany. They are very important to people all over the world. Many farmers use white Leghorns to lay eggs. These birds are known for being very productive. They help provide food for many different countries.

Leghorns have a very specific way they look. Most of them have bright yellow legs. They also have white ear-lobes on their heads. The ear-lobe is a fleshy part near the ear. Most Leghorns have a single comb on top. A comb is the red part on a chicken's head. In some countries, they have a rose comb instead.

These birds have a long history of travel.

They were sent from the port of Livorno to North America. This happened around the year 1828. At first, people called these birds "Italians." By 1865, people in Massachusetts called them Leghorns. This is the English name for the city of Livorno. Some birds were even sent to Britain in 1870.

There are many different colors of Leghorns.

The American Standard of Perfection listed three colors in 1874. These were black, white, and brown. More colors were added over many years. For example, buff and silver were added in 1894. In 1981, new colors like golden duckwing were added. Different countries recognize different amounts of colors. The Leghorn Club in Britain recognizes eighteen colors.

Leghorns are most famous for how many eggs they lay.

A single Leghorn can lay about 280 white eggs every year. Some birds can even lay 320 eggs! These eggs usually weigh at least 50 grams. Because they lay so many, they are used in big farms. People use them to make hybrid birds for industrial work. This helps make many eggs for us to eat every day.
