Leghorn chicken

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Leghorn chickens come from Tuscany in Italy.

Their name comes from a port city called Livorno. In English, people call this city Leghorn. These birds were sent to North America in 1828. At first, people called them "Italians." By 1865, they used the name Leghorn instead.

Leghorns have many different looks. Most people know the white Leghorn. These birds have bright yellow legs. They also have white ear-lobes, which are the fleshy parts on their heads.

Some birds have a single comb on their heads. A comb is the red part on top of a chicken. In some places, they have a rose comb. This is a different shape of comb. There are many colors for these birds. They can be black, brown, or red. Some are even blue or silver.

Leghorns are famous for laying eggs. They are very good at it. A Leghorn can lay about 280 white eggs in one year. Some birds lay as many as 320 eggs!

Because they lay so many eggs, people use them on big farms. They help make many eggs for us to eat.
