Australorp

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Australorp is a special chicken from Australia. It is a dual-purpose breed. This means it is good for both meat and eggs.

These birds came from the Black Orpington chicken in England. Breeders in Australia mixed them with other birds. They used birds like the White Leghorn to make them better. The name Australorp means Australian chicken.

Australorps are famous for laying many eggs. In 1922, six hens set a world record. They laid 1,857 eggs in one year. That is about 310 eggs for each hen. Some hens can lay 364 eggs in a year! Most hens lay about 190 light brown eggs every year.

They come in many colors. In the United States, they are only black. In Australia, they can be black, white, or blue. South Africa recognizes even more colors like gold and buff. These chickens are also great mothers. They are good at sitting on nests to help their chicks. People keep them in many countries around the world.
