The Spitz is a name for many dog breeds.

There are between 50 and 70 different breeds in this group. Scientists do not have one exact definition for them. Most of these dogs have pricked ears. They also have almond-shaped eyes and a pointed muzzle. Their tails often curve over their backs. The name comes from a German word. It means "pointed dog" because of their face shape.

These dogs are built for cold places. Most come from Siberia or the Arctic. They have a double coat to stay warm. A thick undercoat traps heat near the body. A topcoat helps keep the dog waterproof. Small ears help them avoid frostbite. Thick fur on their paws protects them from sharp ice. These features help them live in harsh northern climates.

We have seen these dogs for a long time. Spitz-type dogs appear on Egyptian tombs from the 4th dynasty. Ancient Greek pottery also shows them from 500 B.C. In 1788, Johann Friedrich Gmelin wrote about them. He called the type Canis pomeranus. He did this in his revision of Systema Naturae. This work helped organize how we study animals.

Different breeds have different jobs. Some are general purpose dogs like the Russian laikas. They can hunt, herd, or guard. Others are bred for just one task. The Keeshond was a watchdog for Dutch barges. The tiny Pomeranian was once much larger. It was closer to the size of a Keeshond. Now it is a small court animal.

Spitz dogs can look very different from each other. Large breeds often have faces like wolves. Small breeds often have faces like foxes. Some dogs like the Akita have wolf-like traits. They can be independent or suspicious of strangers. This means they need lots of training as puppies. Many people love them as pets. Some even have mouths that look like they are smiling.
