Motocross is an exciting form of off-road motorcycle racing.

Riders race on enclosed circuits made of dirt and rugged terrain. This sport is special because it tests both the rider and the machine. People love it for the speed and the skill needed to navigate bumps. The name comes from a mix of words. It combines the French word for motorcycle, motocyclette, with the term cross country.

Racing on rough ground changed how motorcycles are built. In the early days, bikes were very similar to street motorcycles. As racing grew, engineers had to find ways to handle the bumps. By the early 1930s, makers added suspension to help absorb shocks. This included rigid frames giving way to more flexible parts. Later, swinging fork rear suspension appeared in the early 1950s. These technical improvements helped bikes move faster over difficult paths.

Motocross has a long and interesting history. It grew from motorcycle trials competitions in the United Kingdom. One early event was the Auto-Cycle Clubs' trial in 1909. Another was the Scottish Six Days Trial that began in 1912. Early races were often called "hare scrambles." The first known scramble race took place in Camberley, Surrey, in 1924.

This means the sport has been around for a very long time.

Many different companies have competed for wins throughout the years. In Britain, teams like BSA and Norton were very famous. In the 1960s, lightweight two-stroke bikes from brands like Husqvarna and CZ became popular.

Later, Japanese makers like Suzuki began to win many championships. In 1970, Joël Robert won the first 250 cc crown for a Japanese factory. Today, the FIM Motocross World Championship is the biggest series in the world.

Motocross has also led to many other types of racing. Supercross is a popular version held in big stadiums.

These tracks have much tighter turns and steeper jumps. There is also Freestyle Motocross, where riders perform acrobatic tricks in the air.

Some riders even race on both dirt and paved roads in a sport called supermoto. Whether racing in a stadium or on a natural hill, the goal is always speed and skill.
