Riders compete in many different ways on many different paths. Some racers use paved roads for road racing. These races happen on closed circuits or on public streets.

Other riders prefer off-road racing on dirt, sand, or mud. This style is often called motocross. In motocross, riders often fly through the air on big jumps. Some races even take place inside large stadiums. This indoor version is known as supercross. Whether on pavement or dirt, every race tests the rider's talent.

Road racing has several special classes for different machines. Grand Prix racing is the highest level of this sport.

These Grand Prix bikes are prototypes. This means they are special machines built only for racing. They do not look like the bikes you buy in a shop. Other races use production motorcycles that are modified for speed. Superbike racing uses bikes that look like those used on public roads. Supersport racing is another class that uses modified production bikes too. These machines must follow very strict rules to stay similar to standard bikes.

Some racing is all about working together as a team.

In sidecar racing, a rider and a passenger share one machine. The passenger must shift their body weight to help the bike turn corners. This teamwork helps the machine perform its best. Endurance racing also focuses on teamwork and strength. In these races, teams of riders try to cover huge distances. They can even change riders during the event to keep going. These races test how long the equipment and the people can last. Reliability is the most important thing for these motorcycles.

There is a long history in many types of racing.

Traditional road racing used to happen on many public roads. Today, only a few places like Europe still do this. Famous races include the Isle of Man TT and the North West 200. Many countries host these races, such as Ireland, Spain, and New Zealand. In the Grand Prix world, engine rules have changed many times. For example, Moto3 started in 2012 with 250cc engines. Moto2 began in 2010 and used Honda engines for a while. Now, Triumph Motorcycles provides the engines for the Moto2 class.

Racing can also be a test of time and nature.

Enduro racing is a type of off-road sport. It often takes place in forests through many different stages. In some versions, riders must try to finish a stage at an exact time. Being too early or too late can cause penalties. There is even a version called Hard Enduro with very tough courses. Other styles like Hare Scramble take place in woods or open fields. Riders try to finish many laps as fast as they can. No matter the style, motorcycle racing is a huge world of adventure.
