Street racing is a way of racing cars on public roads.

It is different from legal drag racing on a track. Some people race because they want to show off fast cars. Others join a community to meet new friends who love cars. These gatherings are called car meets. Some car meets happen at closed tracks. Others happen on the street, but some people there say not to race. This helps them avoid the attention of the police.

There are different ways people race on the streets. In Japan, some racers use mountain passes called tōge. They might race one car at a time or in a chase. Another type is called a sprint. Sprints are long races from one point to another. Drivers try to make the fastest total time. A famous example was the Cannonball Run in the 1970s. It was started by a man named Brock Yates. Today, wealthy people sometimes join rallies like the Gumball 3000. These are long distance sprints through different cities.

Racing on the streets has a very long history. People have raced horses on streets for many centuries. Car racing likely started when the first automobiles were made. In the late 1800s, there were authorized races in Europe. One famous race in 1903 was called the Paris–Madrid race. It was canceled in Bordeaux because it was not safe. Many drivers and people walking nearby were killed. Later, in the mid-1910s, point-to-point runs returned to the United States. A driver named Erwin George Baker set many records during these runs. People called him the "Cannonball" after a fast train.

Street racing can be a very dangerous activity. Drivers often do not use professional safety gear. They might not have a roll cage or a fire suit. This can lead to serious injuries or death.

Between 2000 and 2018, at least 179 people died in street racing accidents in Los Angeles. There are also risks like car theft or property damage. In Japan, racers used to drive very fast on expressways. A group called Mid Night was famous for this. They sometimes drove at speeds over 300 kilometers per hour. Now, speed cameras and more police make this much rarer.

Many countries have strict rules to stop street racing. In Brazil, racers can go to jail or lose their cars. In Canada, causing a death in a race can lead to life in prison. In Hong Kong, police arrested 13 people in 2015 for racing luxury cars. This happened after a student named Hu Bin hit a pedestrian in Hangzhou. In the United States, some groups try to help. A group called Racers Against Street Racing helps teach people. They want drivers to use safe and legal race tracks instead. This keeps the roads safe for everyone.
