These fights occur between individuals or groups of people. They often start because of strong emotions like anger or fear. A fight might start after an argument in a bar. A person might suggest stepping outside to settle the dispute. These events can happen suddenly or be planned ahead of time. Most fights do not last very long. They usually run for only a few minutes or even seconds. The outcome is hard to predict because fighters do not know each other's strengths.

Humans have a very long history of fighting. Evidence of human fighting goes back 430,000 years to Spain. Scientists found a fossil skull there with two fractures. These marks were likely caused by an intentional attack. Another early record is from Nataruk, Kenya. This happened between 9,500 and 10,500 years ago. That was a group fight involving men, women, and children. They used bladelets and arrow projectiles during the fight. These people fought to protect their food, water, and land. They also fought to defend their families or tribes.

Reasons for fighting have changed as humans evolved. In the Stone Age, people fought mostly to survive. They needed to secure resources and protect their territory. Today, people fight for more complex reasons. Some fight to solve personal arguments or misunderstandings. Others fight to gain social status or pride. In some places, people fight to show they are dominant. Alcohol can also play a role in these conflicts. Alcohol does not cause fights directly, but it acts as a catalyst. It can make people react in unpredictable ways.

Street fighting can cause very serious health problems. Fighters may suffer from permanent disabilities or broken bones. Many injuries happen to the face, head, neck, and chest. In fact, the face accounts for 83% of all fractures. These fights can also lead to mental health issues. Some people experience depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Even children watching a fight can feel fear or sadness. This can lead to trouble sleeping or nightmares. Fighting also costs a lot of money to fix. In 1995, fights in a Basque city cost 2.5 million euros in damage.

Most street fighting is illegal because it disrupts public order. Laws vary depending on where you live. In South Australia, fighting can lead to a $1,250 fine. It can also result in three months in prison. In New South Wales, Australia, the punishment can be even higher. People may face ten years in prison for affray. Some people even organize underground fight clubs. In New York, professional fights must follow strict rules. The New York State Athletics Commission requires medical check-ups. They also require an ambulance to be present at the venue.
