It involves taking action when there is a threat of violence. This action can be physical or it can be verbal. Verbal self-defense means using your words to stop an attack. You might use words to de-escalate a situation or end it. This helps prevent a fight before it even starts. Success often depends on how prepared a person is mentally and physically.

There are many ways to use physical force for defense. Some people use unarmed methods like martial arts. Many schools teach styles to help people escape a punch or a knife. Some people use tools called weapons to protect themselves.

These can include batons, pepper spray, or even firearms. Laws about these tools change depending on where you live. Some places have very strict rules about what you can carry. You can even use everyday objects like a flashlight or a baseball bat.

Even a newspaper or a heavy keyring can be used as an improvised tool.

History shows how self-defense has changed for different groups. In the early twentieth century, women began training for self-defense.

This happened in the United States and the United Kingdom. This movement grew alongside the women's rights and suffrage movements. Early feminists wanted to address violence they faced in many places. They wanted to show they could protect themselves without relying on men. Training in boxing or jiu-jitsu gave many women a sense of power. This interest grew again during the 1960s and the 1990s.

Today, many people take special classes to learn these skills. Empowerment Self-Defense courses are very common for women.

These courses teach verbal, psychological, and physical strategies. Instructors help students understand why violence happens in society. They also teach that everyone has the right to protect themselves. Many martial arts styles are taught in a commercial way now. Some systems like Krav Maga are based on modern military training. Other styles like Karate or Kung Fu are very traditional. Some classes are even made just for children and teens.

Laws must decide when self-defense is allowed. The United Nations Charter even recognizes the right of self-defense.

However, most countries say you must use proportional force. This means you should only use as much force as you need. Using too much force can be seen as a crime. In Canada, a person must prove their actions were reasonable. They must also show they believed a threat was actually happening. In the United States, only a small number of gun deaths are ruled justifiable. It is a very complex part of the law.
