Ritual warfare is a special way that some groups fight. It is also called endemic warfare. These fights happen often in certain tribal societies.

This kind of fighting is not meant to be a huge war. Instead, it lets people show their courage. It also lets them show their feelings and their strength. Many people see these fights as a way to solve problems. They can even act like a social exercise for the group.

These battles often work like a game. For example, the Dugum Dani people live in Papua. One time, a battle between them stopped suddenly. This happened because both sides saw a cuckoo dove. They stopped fighting to throw stones at the bird instead!

This shows how some fights can feel like a sport. Some people even compare it to an overenthusiastic football game. The goal is to ease tension within the group. This helps the people live together more easily.

Different groups have different reasons to start a fight. The Dugum Dani and the Chimbu of New Guinea often fight over pigs. Stealing pigs is a very common cause for them. Among the Yanomami in the Amazon, things are different. Their fights often start because of accusations of sorcery.

In the Amazon, some tribes like the Jívaro had constant anger between them. This shows that the reason for a fight changes by place.

Sometimes, small fights can grow into much bigger things. The Yanomami people use several stages for this. They might start with a chest-pounding duel. Then they might have a side-slapping duel. They may move to a club fight or a spear-throwing fight.

The highest stage is called Nomohoni. This is a very serious stage involving massacres. Wars between different tribes can be much more deadly than fights within one tribe. Some wars are even meant to wipe out an entire group.

Many different cultures around the world have warrior traditions. The Maasai live in East Africa. The Zulu are from southeastern Africa. In New Zealand, the Māori have a warrior culture. You can also find these traditions among the Nuer in South Sudan. Other groups include the Sea Dayaks of Borneo and the Naga of India and Myanmar.

In the early 20th century, researchers found many such groups. They listed eighty-three tribes in the Amazon as warlike. This shows how common these traditions can be across the globe.
