Wartime sexual violence is a very serious crime. It happens when people in a war hurt others through sexual acts. This includes things like rape, sexual slavery, or forced marriage. Sometimes, soldiers use this violence to scare or humiliate an enemy. This is called psychological warfare. It can happen during a battle or a mass murder. It can also happen when one group tries to destroy another group. This is known as genocide.

Different groups have different ways of defining these crimes. The Rome Statute is a very important set of rules. It belongs to the International Criminal Court. This document says that rape and sexual slavery are crimes against humanity. It also calls them war crimes. Another group uses a list called the SVAC. This list includes seven types of violence. These are rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, and forced pregnancy. It also lists forced abortion, sexual mutilation, and sexual torture.

In the Middle Ages, the rules were very different. Some people thought hurting women was a reward for winning. They used it to show they were strong or successful. The Catholic Church tried to stop this. They started the Peace and Truce of God in 989. This was meant to protect women and civilians. In 1159, a writer named John of Salisbury wrote about rules for armies. Later, in the 14th century, some army codes banned rape. They did this to keep soldiers disciplined.

As time passed, more laws were written to protect people. In 1625, Hugo Grotius wrote about the laws of war. He said rape should be punished just like it is in peace. In 1863, the United States used the Lieber Code. This was a big step for humanitarian law. It said that rape was forbidden under the penalty of death. In 1899 and 1907, the Hague Conventions were made. These rules said that the rights of families must be respected.

In the 1900s, special courts began to hold people accountable. After World War I, a group looked for evidence of these crimes. After World War II, the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals were set up. These were the first major international courts. They tried people for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the 1990s, new legal tools were made to stop genocide. The Akayesu case in Rwanda was a very important moment. It successfully prosecuted rape as a way to commit genocide.
