Riders race off-road bikes on enclosed paths. This sport grew from old trials races in Britain. Early races were called hare scrambles. People wanted to find the fastest rider. The name motocross blends words for motorcycle and cross country.

Racing on rough ground changed how bikes work. Makers added suspension to help bikes handle bumps. Suspension is a set of parts that absorbs shocks. In the 1960s, light two-stroke engines became very popular. These engines used a special way to make power. Later, Japanese makers began to win many races.

Some races happen in big stadiums. These are called supercross races.

Riders also do freestyle motocross. In these events, they show off jumping skills. They perform tricks in the air. Other riders compete in the Motocross des Nations. In this event, teams of three represent their home nations.
