It takes place on the Baja California Peninsula. Drivers race over very long paths. Some races go from one city to another. These are called point-to-point races. Other races start and end in the same place. These are called loop races. The race can be 850 miles or more.

Many kinds of vehicles race at once. There are dirt bikes and small buggies. There are also big Trophy Trucks.

Drivers face many hard challenges. They must drive through thick dust and fog. They watch for big rocks and deep mud. They even have to look for cattle and wild animals.

The race has a long history. It began with timed runs in 1962. Those early runs were to test motorcycles. Later, people used buggies to break speed records. Ed Pearlman helped start the official race in 1967. Today, people from six continents come to compete. It is a big test of skill and speed.
