It takes place on the Baja California Peninsula. This race is very important to people who love racing. Competitors come from six different continents to join in. The course can be 850 miles or even longer. Some races are called "point-to-point" because they start and end in different cities. Others are "loop" races that start and end in the same place. Most loop races start and finish in Ensenada.

Many different types of vehicles race on the same course at the same time. You might see big Trophy Trucks that are built for speed. There are also dirt bikes, ATVs, and side-by-sides. Some people drive "Baja Bugs," which are Volkswagen Beetles modified for the dirt. Other racers use "truggy" vehicles or custom-made race cars.

The race is a huge test of skill. Drivers must handle many hard jobs. They drive through thick dust, fog, and mud. They must also watch for big boulders, cliffs, and sudden drops in the ground. Even cattle and local wildlife can be on the path.

The history of the race began with simple timed runs. In 1962, Dave Ekins and Billy Robertson Jr. rode motorcycles to test how reliable they were. They rode from Tijuana to La Paz. It took them 39 hours and 56 minutes to finish. Later, Bruce Meyers used a buggy called "Old Red" to try and beat that record. He succeeded in 1967 with a time of 34 hours and 45 minutes. This helped start a long competition between motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles. These early adventures brought a lot of attention to the Baja peninsula.

Ed Pearlman helped turn these record attempts into an official event. In 1967, he helped start the National Off-Road Racing Association, or NORRA. The first official race was called the Mexican 1000 Rally. It started in Tijuana and ended in La Paz. Vic Wilson and Ted Mangels won that first race in a Meyers Manx buggy. Their winning time was 27 hours and 38 minutes. Later, a group called SCORE International took over the race. They began running the event in 1975. Today, the race is still a major part of a four-race series.

You might see the Baja 1000 in movies or games. The film *Timerider* shows a hero racing in the event. The TV show *The Fall Guy* also featured a Baja 1000 story. There is even a video game called *Baja: Edge of Control*.

The race is part of a larger series of events. This series includes the San Felipe 250, the Baja 400, and the Baja 500. Every year, the race brings together different teams and many fans. It remains one of the most famous off-road races in the world.
