Kunimitsu Takahashi was a legendary racer from Japan. Many people called him "Kuni-san" as a sign of respect. He is famous for being the "father of drifting." Drifting is a very skillful way to drive a car.

His long career in motorsports lasted from 1958 until 1999. He showed great talent on both two wheels and four wheels. He changed the way people thought about racing speed and control.

His journey began with fast motorcycles. In 1961, he won a big race at Hockenheim in Germany. He rode a 250cc Honda to that victory. This made him the first Japanese rider to win a World Grand Prix. He won four of these world-level races in total.

In 1962, he had a serious crash at the Isle of Man TT. Because of his injuries, he decided to switch to car racing in 1965.

As a car driver, Takahashi found even more success. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a specific class. In 1995, his team used a Honda NSX to win the GT2 Class.

He also became a four-time All-Japan Sports Prototype Champion. He won many other titles in Japanese racing series like JTC and JGTC. Even at age 59, he won a race in 1999. This was his final victory as a driver.

He also competed in the highest levels of racing. Takahashi drove in one Formula One race on October 23, 1977. He drove a Tyrrell car during the Japanese Grand Prix.

He also raced in the Japanese Formula 3000 championship for many years. From 1987 to 1992, he was a regular in those races. He even entered eight different 24 Hours of Le Mans races between 1986 and 1996.

Later in life, he focused on leading others. He started his own group called Team Kunimitsu in 1994. The team used cars from Porsche and later from Honda.

His team won many championships in the Super GT series. In 2018, his team won a Drivers Championship with driver Jenson Button. Takahashi passed away from lymphoma on March 16, 2022, at age 82. He remains a hero in the racing world.
