Agostini's racing journey started with a bit of a struggle. His father owned a transport company in Lovere. His father did not want him to race motorcycles. Agostini had to race in secret at first. He began with hill climbs and road racing. Eventually, his father understood and supported him. In 1963, he won the Italian 175cc championship. This helped him join the Moto Morini team. Later, he joined the famous MV Agusta factory team in 1965.

Racing in the 1960s was a very hard job. The tracks were not as safe as they are today. Riders had to race past metal barriers or hay bales. Some tracks even had railroad crossings on them. Agostini had a famous rival named Mike Hailwood. They fought for many championships in the 1960s. One race in 1967 was a very close duel. They were tied at the end of the season. Agostini won the title by only three seconds.

Agostini was incredibly successful with the MV Agusta team. He won seven 500cc titles in a row from 1966 to 1972. He also won seven 350cc titles from 1968 to 1974. At one point, he won 58 races in a row. This included 32 wins in the 500cc class. He was a master of the four-stroke engine. However, new two-stroke engines from Japan began to arrive. Riders like Jarno Saarinen started to challenge him.

Agostini also helped make racing a safer sport. In 1972, he decided to boycott the Isle of Man TT. He felt the 37.73-mile circuit was too dangerous. This was a big deal because it was a very famous race. His choice helped lead to better safety rules for all riders. After racing, he became a manager for Yamaha and Cagiva. He has received many honors for his skill. He was named an FIM Legend in 2010.
