Born in Brescia, Italy, on June 16, 1942, he became a dominant professional road racer. His career spanned from 1963 to 1977 in the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Championships. Agostini holds a record that may never be broken. He amassed 122 Grand Prix victories and won 15 World Championships. This is the highest number of titles achieved by any competitor in the history of the sport. He was not just a fast rider; he was a charming star who became a film actor in Italy.

Agostini's path to greatness began with personal challenges. His father owned a transport company in Lovere and did not approve of motorcycle racing. To pursue his passion, Agostini had to compete in secret. He started with hill climb events and road racing. Eventually, his father accepted his career choice. Agostini won the 1963 Italian 175cc championship on a Moto Morini. This success led to a professional contract with Count Alfonso Morini. In 1964, he won the Italian 350cc title and earned his first World Championship points.

A major turning point occurred in 1965 when Count Domenico Agusta signed him. Agostini joined the MV Agusta factory racing team as a teammate to Mike Hailwood. In his debut for the team, he defeated Hailwood at the Nürburgring circuit. This period was defined by intense competition. Agostini fought Jim Redman for the 350cc title in 1965. He also faced the legendary Mike Hailwood in a fierce rivalry. The two riders engaged in a dramatic duel for the 500cc World Championship in 1967.

The 1967 championship battle was decided by a very slim margin. After eight rounds, both Agostini and Hailwood had four victories each. At the final race in Canada, Hailwood won to tie Agostini on total points. Because they had the same number of wins, the tiebreaker relied on second-place finishes. Agostini secured the title by only three seconds over Hailwood. This era of racing was extremely dangerous. Riders competed on tracks lined with metal barriers or hay bales. Some circuits even included railroad crossings.

Agostini achieved unprecedented dominance with the MV Agusta team. He won seven consecutive 500cc World Championships between 1966 and 1972. He also won seven consecutive 350cc championships from 1968 to 1974. Between 1968 and 1970, he won every single race he entered in those two classes. His winning streak reached a staggering 58 consecutive races. This streak included 32 wins in the 500cc class and 26 in the 350cc class. This dominance was aided by the MV Agusta 500 Triple motorcycle.

As technology changed, so did the competition. The FIM introduced new rules in 1968 regarding engine cylinders and gearboxes. This shift favored two-stroke engines over the four-stroke engines used by MV Agusta. Japanese manufacturers like Yamaha began to dominate with two-stroke technology. Riders such as Jarno Saarinen began to challenge Agostini's supremacy. Saarinen handed Agostini his first head-to-head defeat in 1972.

Agostini also played a vital role in improving rider safety. In 1972, he boycotted the Isle of Man TT because the 37.73-mile circuit was too dangerous. His influential status helped lead to the event being removed from the World Championship calendar later.

After retiring from motorcycle racing, Agostini tried to race automobiles. He was 35 years old and could not replicate his previous success. He then transitioned into management for the Yamaha and Cagiva factory teams. His immense contributions to the sport have been widely recognized. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. He joined the MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2010, the FIM named him an official Legend.
