He is widely regarded as one of the most successful racers in the history of the Isle of Man TT. In 2015, readers of the Belfast Telegraph voted him Northern Ireland's greatest-ever sports star. His career was defined by incredible speed and a deep commitment to humanitarian causes. Dunlop's life and legacy continue to influence the world of motorcycling and charity work today.

Racing on public roads requires immense skill and focus. Dunlop was known for his specific racing rituals and superstitions. He almost always wore a bright yellow crash helmet during his competitions. He also famously wore a red T-shirt while riding. These personal touches became part of his identity on the track.

His ability to navigate dangerous courses at high speeds earned him a place among racing icons.

Dunlop achieved remarkable success across several major racing events. At the Isle of Man TT, he secured a total of 26 victories. This includes three impressive hat-tricks, which are three wins in a single meeting. These hat-tricks occurred in 1985, 1988, and 2000. He also won the Ulster Grand Prix 24 times during his career. Additionally, he secured 13 victories at the North West 200. In 1986, he won his fifth consecutive TT Formula One world title.

His racing history is filled with specific milestones and high speeds. In the year 2000, he set a fastest lap of 123.87 mph during a Senior race. Although he finished third in that specific race, the speed was a significant achievement. Dunlop was part of a famous group of racers from County Antrim. This group was known as the "Armoy Armada." It included other talented riders like Frank Kennedy, Mervyn Robinson, and Jim Dunlop.

Beyond the racetrack, Dunlop was a dedicated humanitarian. He spent much of his time helping children in need. Before the annual racing season began, he drove a van filled with food and clothing to orphanages. He provided aid to children in Romania, Albania, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. For his service to the sport, he received an MBE in 1986. In 1996, he was awarded an OBE for his selfless work with Romanian orphans.

Tragedy struck in July 2000 during a race in Tallinn, Estonia. Dunlop was leading a 125cc race on the Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimetsa Circuit. The track conditions were wet, which caused him to lose control of his motorcycle. He died instantly upon impact with trees. His death was felt deeply around the world. In Estonia, the official government website was replaced with a tribute within hours. Approximately 50,000 people attended his funeral procession in Northern Ireland.

Many honors and memorials exist to preserve his memory. The most successful rider at the annual TT races is now awarded the "Joey Dunlop Cup." On the Isle of Man, a statue of Dunlop on a Honda motorcycle overlooks the Bungalow Bend. A specific curve at the 26th milestone is named "Joey's" in his honor.

In his hometown of Ballymoney, the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre stands as a tribute.

The Joey Dunlop Foundation was established to continue his spirit of service. This charity provides appropriate accommodation for disabled visitors to the Isle of Man. Memorial gardens in Ballymoney also honor both Joey and his brother, Robert. Recent celebrations have kept his legacy vibrant for new generations. In 2025, a "Joey 25" event featured a parade of 25 of his iconic motorcycles. This event included many famous racing champions and helped celebrate his enduring impact on the world.
