Rallying is a motorsport where drivers race on varied surfaces like gravel, snow, or asphalt. McRae achieved massive success in the World Rally Championship (WRC). In 1995, he became the first Scottish driver to win the WRC Drivers' title. At just 27 years old, he became the youngest-ever World Champion. This specific record remained unbroken for many years until 2022. His career was defined by intense competition and a drive to push vehicles to their limits.

McRae's journey into professional racing began with a foundation in various motorsports. He started by riding trial bikes at a young age. Later, he became the Scottish schoolboy motocross champion at age thirteen. By age sixteen, he began competing in autotesting with a Mini Cooper. He eventually moved into stage rallies, using a borrowed Hillman Avenger GT. In 1986, he entered the Scottish Rally Championship driving a Talbot Sunbeam. He worked as a technician for his father's plumbing and heating business before turning professional. In 1991, he signed with the Subaru team for an annual wage of about £10,000.

Throughout his career, McRae drove for several major factory teams.
