He is widely considered the most successful driver in the history of the World Rally Championship (WRC). Loeb secured a record nine consecutive world titles. This historic streak was eventually equaled by Sébastien Ogier in 2025. Beyond titles, Loeb holds multiple WRC records. These include the most individual event wins, the most podium finishes, and the most stage wins. His career is defined by an extraordinary ability to master diverse driving environments.

To succeed in rally racing, a driver must master various surfaces and technical challenges. Loeb is particularly noted as a tarmac expert. Between 2005 and 2013, he won all but three of the WRC rallies held on tarmac. However, he also proved his versatility on other terrains. He was the first non-Nordic driver to win the snow-based Swedish Rally. He also achieved victories on gravel in the Cyprus Rally, the Rally of Turkey, and the Rally of Australia. This versatility requires precise control over the vehicle's mechanics and the driver's physical responses.

Loeb's path to racing was unconventional. Before he was a driver, he was a competitive gymnast. He was a four-time Champion of Alsace and a one-time champion of the French Grand East. In 1994, he worked as an apprentice electrician at the Socalec company. While working, he was already noted for a daring and reckless driving style. In 1995, at age 21, he left his vocational training and job to focus on racing. He entered the Citroën Saxo Trophy in 1998 and won the title in 1999.

His rise through the professional ranks was rapid and highly successful. In 2001, he became the first winner of the Junior World Rally Championship. He won five of the six events in that series. He joined the Citroën World Rally Team for the 2002 season. That same year, he and co-driver Daniel Elena achieved their first WRC victory at the Rallye Deutschland.

In 2003, he won three WRC events: Monte Carlo, Germany, and Sanremo. Although he lost the championship to Petter Solberg by only one point, his reputation grew as he defeated famous teammates like Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae.

Loeb's dominance reached a peak during the mid-2000s. In 2004, he won six events and six runner-up spots to take the drivers' title. He won the championship by a massive 36-point margin. In 2005, he set a new record by winning seven rallies in a single season. That year, he also became the first driver to win all twelve stages of a single WRC rally at the Tour de Corse. He extended his championship lead to 56 points, breaking a record set by Walter Röhrl in 1980.

Even after a mountain-biking accident in 2006 caused a broken humerus, he managed to secure his third consecutive title.

Loeb has expanded his expertise far beyond traditional rallying. He is the only driver to win an event in four different FIA-affiliated world championships.

Since 2016, he has participated in the Dakar Rally almost every year, earning second-place finishes in 2017, 2022, and 2023. He has also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the World Touring Car Championship, and the FIA World Rallycross Championship.

His influence extends to the business and organizational side of motorsports. In 2012, he founded his own team, Sébastien Loeb Racing. This team participates in various racing series. In 2013, his Loeb Racing team competed in the FIA GT Series, where he scored four wins and finished fourth overall. His career has earned him significant honors, including being named the French Sportsman of the Year in 2007 and 2009. In 2009, he was also made a knight of the Legion of Honour (Légion d'honneur). Loeb remains a constant presence in the racing world, continuing to compete across multiple disciplines.
