Rallycross is a high-intensity form of sprint-style motorsport.

It is defined by racing on mixed-surface circuits. These tracks combine sealed surfaces, like asphalt, with unsealed surfaces, such as gravel or mud.

Drivers use either modified production touring cars or specialized prototype racing cars. This combination of surfaces and vehicle types makes the sport a unique test of driving skill.

The mechanics of a rallycross race focus on speed and strategy. Up to eight cars start a race simultaneously on a short circuit. These races are very brief, often lasting only about three minutes. Most events consist of several heats, where total run times determine the classification. In major series, such as the FIA World Rallycross Championship, drivers must complete a "joker lap."

This is an extended section of the track that every driver must take at least once. This rule adds a tactical layer, as drivers may choose the joker lap to find clear track or avoid contact.

Because rallycross is a sprint discipline, there is no time to settle into a rhythm. Drivers cannot hold back to protect a lead like they might in longer races. The intense nature of the short heats requires constant aggression and precision. The mix of surfaces means a driver must constantly adjust their handling. They must transition smoothly between the grip of asphalt and the sliding nature of loose dirt.

The history of rallycross began with a vision for television. On February 4, 1967, the first event was held at Lydden Circuit in Kent, Great Britain.

Producer Robert Reed wanted to condense the long ordeals of rallying into a short spectacle. He aimed to turn a seven-day, 3,000-mile rally into a seven-minute, one-mile race. Reed worked with Bud Smith and the 750 MC to organize the event. The first race was won by Vic Elford, driving an original Porsche 911.

Following its British debut, the sport saw rapid international expansion. By 1969, rallycross arrived in the Netherlands. The first Dutch event took place at a military testing ground near Venlo. Eventually, the Eurocircuit opened in Valkenswaard, which was the first track in the world built specifically for rallycross. The sport also reached Australia in 1969, with events held at Leppington and Calder Park Raceway. In the United States, the Global RallyCross Championship became a major series, featuring drivers like Travis Pastrana and Ken Block.

The scale of the sport has varied significantly over time. In the late 1960s, a single championship round in Britain was watched by up to 1.2 million viewers. In the United States, X Games versions of the sport used heavily modified cars. These vehicles featured turbocharged engines producing 600 horsepower. They utilized all-wheel drive and sequential gearboxes to handle the intense racing. They even used special off-road suspension designed for long jumps.

Rallycross connects various aspects of automotive engineering and media production. It bridges the gap between traditional rallying and autocross. It also demonstrates how television production can shape the rules and design of a sport. From amateur clubman races to the professional FIA World Rallycross Championship, the sport serves both as a competitive arena and a high-speed entertainment product.
