It features sprint-style races on short, winding tracks. These circuits are unique because they use mixed surfaces. Drivers must race on both smooth asphalt and loose dirt or mud.

This variety makes the driving very challenging and fun to watch. The cars used are often modified production touring cars or special prototype racing cars.

Racing in rallycross works through quick, intense bursts of speed. Up to eight cars start a race all at once. These races are short, usually lasting only about three minutes. Most events use a series of heats to find the fastest drivers. Some series, like the FIA World Rallycross Championship, use a special rule called a joker lap.

A driver must take this longer section of the track at least once. This adds a smart tactical choice to the race. A driver might take the joker lap to find a clear path without other cars.

This sport was created specifically for television audiences. It began on February 4, 1967, at the Lydden Circuit in Great Britain. A producer named Robert Reed wanted to make racing more exciting for viewers. He wanted to combine the thrills of autocross with the ordeals of rallying. He hoped to turn a long, seven-day rally into a seven-minute race.

The very first race at Lydden was won by Vic Elford in a Porsche 911.

After it started in Britain, rallycross spread to many other countries. In 1969, the sport reached the Netherlands. The first Dutch event was held at a military testing ground near Venlo. Later, the Eurocircuit opened in Valkenswaard, which was the first track built just for rallycross. The sport also moved to Australia in 1969 with a meeting at Leppington.

In the United States, the Global RallyCross Championship became very popular. It featured famous drivers and was even shown on ESPN.

Today, rallycross is a global sport with many different levels. Some people race in huge world championships organized by the FIA. Others compete in amateur club races or special events like the X Games. In the X Games, cars have huge engines with 600 horsepower. These cars even have special suspension to help them make long jumps. Whether it is a small local race or a giant international event, rallycross is all about speed and skill.
