It uses short tracks with mixed surfaces. Drivers race on smooth asphalt and loose dirt or mud.

Up to eight cars start a race at the same time. The races are short sprints. They usually last about three minutes. This speed means drivers cannot slow down to save energy. They must drive with great skill from the start.

In many races, drivers must take a joker lap. This is a longer part of the track.

Taking this path adds a smart plan to the race. It can help a driver find a clear path to drive faster.

Rallycross began in 1967 at Lydden Circuit in Great Britain. It was made for television. A man named Robert Reed wanted to make racing fun for TV viewers. He wanted to combine the thrills of different racing styles. The first race was won by Vic Elford in a Porsche 911. The sport grew quickly. In the 1960s, nearly ten million people in Britain watched it on TV.
