Runners race on natural ground like grass or dirt. They may run through woods or over hills. The course might have gravel roads or small obstacles. Some races happen in rain, snow, or sleet.

People can race alone or in teams. Teams often use the name Harriers. This name comes from a type of hunting dog. Long ago, runners played a game called paper chasing. Some runners were called hares. They dropped paper scraps for others to follow. This was like a trail of scent.

Runners use special shoes called spikes. These shoes have small metal pins on the bottom. The spikes help runners stay steady on mud.

For long races, runners must train hard. They must also think about food before they start. Some runners like to stay in a group. This helps them feel more support from teammates. Others prefer to run their own race. Rules for these races began in Britain. The first English championship was in 1876.
