Most races happen in the autumn and winter. Riders race on short paths. These paths have grass, dirt, and sand. They also have steep hills and mud.

In these races, riders must be very skilled. Some parts of the course are too hard to ride. Riders must jump off their bikes quickly. They carry the bike on their shoulder to get past obstacles. This is called portage. Then, they jump back on to ride again.

Cyclo-cross bikes look like road bikes. They are very light so they are easy to carry. They have knobby tires to help with grip. These tires help riders stay steady on slippery ground. Many riders wear one-piece suits called skinsuits. These keep them warm in the cold weather. They also stop clothes from catching on tree branches.

This sport is very popular in places like Belgium and France. It started many years ago. Some say it began when road racers took shortcuts through fields. They did this to stay fit during the winter. Now, people all over the world love this fast and tough sport.
