Race walking is a fast sport. It is part of athletics.

It is different from running. One foot must touch the ground at all times. The rules say your back toe cannot leave the ground until your front heel hits. Your supporting leg must also stay straight.

Judges watch the walkers with their eyes. They look for any loss of contact. If a walker breaks the rules, they get a red card. Three red cards mean the walker must stop.

To go fast, walkers take quick, short steps. They move their hips to push forward. This helps them keep their speed. Top walkers can go very fast in a 20 km race. They can finish in under five minutes per kilometer.

This sport began in Britain. It grew from a game called pedestrianism. It was a popular way for people to compete in the 1800s. Today, people walk in many big races. Some races are very long, like the Paris-Colmar. It is over 450 km long!
