Success in these sports requires intense physical preparation. In 2001, Carmichael changed his approach to training. He hired Aldon Baker to manage his physical conditioning. Baker was a former professional cyclist. This new regimen helped Carmichael become a more consistent racer. He won 13 of 15 rounds in the 2001 Supercross season. This discipline led to two unprecedented "perfect seasons." In 2002 and 2004, he won every single moto he entered. These feats showed how much training impacts performance.

Carmichael's career progressed through different engine classes and manufacturers. He debuted professionally in 1997 with the Splitfire Pro Circuit Kawasaki team. He initially competed in the 125cc class. By 1999, he transitioned to the 250cc class. He achieved major success riding for three different brands. He raced for Kawasaki, Honda, and Suzuki. His ability to win on different machines proved his versatility. He also represented Team USA in the Motocross des Nations three times. These international events contributed to several victories for his country.

His championship record is filled with specific, impressive milestones. He won seven AMA Motocross 450cc championships. He also secured five AMA Supercross 450cc titles. In 2002, he won 24 of 24 motos in the outdoor championship. He repeated this feat in 2004 on a Honda CRF 450. This was his first major effort using a four-stroke engine. Four-stroke engines use a different combustion cycle than two-stroke engines. During the 2005 season, he faced a very difficult field. He competed against stars like James "Bubba" Stewart, Chad Reed, and Kevin Windham. Despite this "perfect storm," he regained his Supercross title.

After retiring from motorcycles in 2007, Carmichael pursued stock car racing.
