Richie McCaw is a retired professional rugby union player from New Zealand. He is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. McCaw is most famous for his long career with the All Blacks, the national team of New Zealand.

He served as the team captain for 110 of his 148 test matches. A test match is a high-level international game. During his career, he achieved the rare feat of winning two Rugby World Cups. He led his team to these massive victories in 2011 and 2015. He is one of only two captains in history to win two World Cups.

On the rugby pitch, McCaw was a specialist in several roles. He predominantly played as an openside flanker. This position requires a player to be very fast and skilled at winning the ball. He also played as a blindside flanker and a number 8.

These roles involve intense physical contact and strategic positioning. McCaw was a vital part of several successful teams. He played for the Crusaders in Super Rugby and Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship (NPC). The Crusaders won four Super Rugby titles during his time. Canterbury won the NPC five times. His presence helped establish a winning culture for both clubs.

McCaw's path to professional rugby began in rural New Zealand. He was born on December 31, 1980, in Oamaru. He grew up on a family farm with his sister, Joanna.

As a child, he learned to fly gliders with his grandfather. He began playing rugby for the Kurow rugby club as a youngster. He later attended Otago Boys' High School in Dunedin. There, he was the head boy and played for the school's 1st XV team. He eventually attended Lincoln University to study agricultural science. He completed almost all his requirements for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree before choosing rugby.

His rise to the international stage was remarkably fast. McCaw made his Super Rugby debut for the Crusaders in 2001. That same year, he was selected for the All Blacks' end-of-year tour. This was surprising because he had played only eight minutes of Super 12 rugby. His debut match was against Ireland at Lansdowne Road. Even though New Zealand was trailing at halftime, McCaw helped the team win 40–29. He was named man-of-the-match for his performance. This game proved he belonged at the highest level of the sport.

Throughout his career, McCaw faced significant physical challenges. He suffered from recurring concussions, which are injuries caused by a blow to the head. These injuries caused him to miss several games due to dizziness and headaches. In 2005, after a serious head knock, he visited a hospital. He saw a young boy who had been injured playing rugby. This experience made him question his future in the sport. However, a conversation with another patient helped him decide to continue. He decided to keep playing because it was what he enjoyed doing.

McCaw's statistics reflect his dominance in rugby union. He holds the international record for the most game wins by a player, with 131 victories. He also holds the record for the most matches played as a captain, with 110. He was the first All Black to reach 100 caps. He also became the first rugby union player to win 100 tests.

His record for most appearances was 148 caps. He held this record from 2015 until 2020. He won the World Rugby Player of the Year award a joint record three times. In 2021, he was named the World Rugby player of the decade for the period between 2011 and 2020.

His leadership extended beyond individual trophies. Under his captaincy, the All Blacks won seven Tri-Nations titles. They also won the Bledisloe Cup eight times. They completed three successful Grand Slam tours. A Grand Slam occurs when a team wins every match on a tour of the home nations.
