Carter's primary role involved complex tactical play and precise kicking. He specialized in scoring points through penalties, conversions, and drop goals. A penalty is scored after an opponent breaks a rule. A conversion follows a try to earn extra points. A drop goal is a kick made during active play by dropping the ball and kicking it as it bounces. In the 2015 Rugby World Cup final against Australia, Carter demonstrated this mastery. He successfully kicked four penalties, two conversions, and one drop goal. This performance earned him the Man of the Match award.

Carter's career featured many distinct stages and club affiliations. He began his domestic journey with Canterbury in 2002. He joined the Crusaders in 2003, where he moved from second five-eighth to first five-eighth by 2005. His international career with the All Blacks began in 2003 at age 21. After his time in New Zealand, he played for Perpignan in France during a sabbatical. He later joined Racing Metro, which he later called Racing 92. He also played for the Kobelco Steelers in Japan's Top League.

His path was shaped by both family history and personal determination. He was born in Southbridge, New Zealand, to Neville and Bev Carter. His great uncle, Bill Dalley, was a member of the 1924–25 Invincibles rugby team. Carter started playing for the Southbridge Rugby Club at age five. He attended Ellesmere College before transferring to Christchurch Boys' High School. This move was intended to improve his chances of professional success. He was described as a shy and quiet young man with grand aspirations.

Carter's statistical achievements are significant within the sport. He played 112 tests for the All Blacks and scored 1,598 total points. This total includes 29 tries, 293 conversions, 281 penalties, and 8 drop goals. He is the only player in international rugby union history to exceed 1,500 test points. He also holds the record for the highest average of 14.27 points per match for players with over 500 points. His scoring records against specific nations are also notable. He scored 178 points against England, 163 against France, and 255 against South Africa.

He faced several physical challenges during his long career. In 2009, he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing for Perpignan. He also dealt with a groin injury during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. This injury occurred during a training session before a match against Canada. In 2013, he experienced another Achilles tendon tear. Despite these setbacks, he continued to compete at the highest level. He eventually announced his retirement from professional rugby on February 20, 2021.

Carter's impact connects to the broader culture of New Zealand rugby. He was part of the All Blacks teams that won the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015. He was one of only 43 players to win multiple Rugby World Cups. He also won three Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders. His success helped establish him as one of the highest-paid players in New Zealand. He also helped the All Blacks maintain a strong presence in the Bledisloe Cup. He never lost a Bledisloe Cup match since his debut.
