Lin eventually mastered the sport through consistent dominance in major tournaments. He won his first All England Open title in 2004 by defeating Peter Gade. He helped China win the Thomas Cup in 2004, ending a 14-year drought. In 2005, he won the World Cup and helped China win the Sudirman Cup.
