Ma Long

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ma Long is a professional table tennis player from China. He is widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of the sport. His dominance is so significant that the International Table Tennis Federation gave him nicknames like "The Dictator" and "The Dragon." The name "The Dragon" comes from his name, Lóng, which represents his Chinese zodiac year. He has achieved legendary status by winning nearly every major title available in men's singles competition.

Ma Long's journey began with rapid success in his youth. He won both the Asian and World Junior Championships early on. In 2006, he became the youngest world champion at age 17 during the Bremen World Team Championship. He developed his foundational skills under teachers like Wang Hao and Ma Kai Xuan. Later, he studied under the coach Qin Zhijian. Before he turned 22, he reached the finals of 11 ITTF World Tour tournaments and won eight of them.

Despite his talent, his early career included significant challenges. During the 2010–2014 period, he was often the world number 1 but faced setbacks. After a 560-day win streak on the ITTF World Tour, a dip in ratings meant he was not selected for the 2012 Olympics. Coach Liu Guoliang noted that Ma had the necessary tools but lacked mental toughness under pressure. This was seen in losses to players like Timo Boll and Vladimir Samsonov. He also lost three consecutive World Championship semifinals to his compatriot, Wang Hao.

Between 2013 and 2015, Ma Long developed much greater consistency. He won the China Open five times, tying him with Wang Liqin. In 2014, he won the Victor Barna Award as the best player at the WTTC. His major breakthrough occurred at the 2015 WTTC, where he defeated Fang Bo in the final. That year, he only lost once in international competition. He also won the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals by defeating Fan Zhendong in a seven-game match.

The year 2016 was a historic period for Ma Long. He won the Qatar Open, breaking Wang Liqin's record for most ITTF World Tour singles titles by a Chinese player. At the Rio Olympics, he secured the gold medal in men's singles. He defeated the reigning champion, Zhang Jike, with a 4–0 sweep in the final. This victory made him the fifth male player to complete a Grand Slam. He was also the first male to complete a career double Grand Slam.

Ma Long holds several records that define his greatness. He is the only table tennis athlete to win six gold medals at the Summer Olympics. No other player has won more than four. He held the world number 1 ranking for a total of 64 months. This includes 34 consecutive months starting in March 2015. He also won the World Championship in men's singles consecutively in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

His career connects him to a very elite group of athletes. Ma Long is one of only two players to win every important singles competition possible. The only other person to achieve this is Deng Yaping. He was also the first male to be the reigning champion of all four major titles at the same time. His ability to maintain excellence across decades makes him an immortal figure in the world of table tennis.
