sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Wu Minxia is a retired professional diver from China. She is recognized as one of the most decorated athletes in the history of diving. Her career focused on two main types of springboard events. These included the 1 metre springboard and the 3 metre springboard. She also specialized in synchronized 3 metre springboard events. In synchronized diving, two athletes must perform their dives in perfect unison. This requires immense skill and coordination between partners.

Wu's competitive journey began at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships. She entered the sport at a very high level of competition. Throughout her career, she represented China in every major international tournament. This included the Asian Games, the Olympic Games, and the FINA World Aquatics Championships. She competed at this elite level through 2016. Her ability to maintain such high performance for many years is quite rare.

Success in diving often depends on the partnership between athletes. Wu Minxia worked with several different world-class partners during her career. Her first major partner was Guo Jingjing. Together, they won the 3 metre synchronized springboard title at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships. They also won gold at the 2002 Asian Games and the 2004 Summer Olympics. They repeated this gold medal success at the 2008 Summer Olympics. After Guo retired, Wu formed new partnerships to continue her winning streak.

Wu's ability to adapt to new partners showed her incredible talent. She later partnered with He Zi for major competitions. This new duo won the 3 metre synchronized springboard title at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Wu and He Zi won gold medals in both the 3 metre springboard and the synchronized event. This achievement made Wu the first woman to win gold in a diving event at three consecutive Olympic Games. Later, she partnered with Shi Tingmao. Together, they won gold at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships.

Wu's career statistics are truly remarkable. She is an eight-time world champion. She also holds five titles as an Olympic and Asian champion. By winning with Shi Tingmao, she became the first person to win seven gold medals in the synchronized 3 metre springboard event. These numbers highlight her dominance in the sport over more than a decade. Her consistency across different eras of diving is a significant part of her legacy.

During the 2012 London Olympics, a difficult personal situation became public. After her springboard competition, Wu learned that her parents had withheld important family news. Her grandmother had passed away one year earlier. Additionally, her mother was battling cancer. Her father explained that they misled her to ensure she stayed focused on her intense training. This revelation caused significant criticism and discussion within China.

Following her retirement from professional diving, Wu transitioned to her personal life. She accepted a marriage proposal from Zhang Xiaocheng in May 2017. The couple held their wedding ceremony in Fuping, Shaanxi, on 17 May 2017. Since then, she has focused on her family. Wu welcomed her daughter on 19 December 2018. She later welcomed her son on 7 February 2022. Her life continues to move from the world of international sports to her life in China.
