His dominance helped define an era of modern professional racing.

Johnson's path to greatness began with high-speed competition at a very young age. Born in El Cajon, California, he started racing motorcycles in 1980 at age four. By the age of seven, he won a 60cc class championship. He later transitioned to off-road racing using buggies and trucks. He competed in several major organizations, including the Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG). He also raced in the Short-course Off-road Drivers Association (SODA) and SCORE International. In these leagues, he earned Rookie of the Year honors in all three.

His off-road years provided a foundation of intense mechanical and driving skill. In the SODA series, he drove Class 8 Trophy Trucks. These powerful vehicles generate approximately 800 horsepower. Johnson won multiple races at Lake Geneva Raceway during his time in this class. He also experienced the grueling nature of desert racing in the SCORE series. During the 1995 Baja 1000, he led for over 900 miles. However, he fell asleep at the wheel and lost his course. This event resulted in a wrecked Trophy Truck named "Butch."

In 1997, Johnson began his transition to asphalt oval racing. He competed in the American Speed Association (ASA) for late model touring cars. While driving for Herzog Motorsports, he won the ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie title in 1998. He then moved to the NASCAR Busch Series in 2000. During this time, he survived a massive accident at Watkins Glen International. His brakes failed at over 150 MPH, causing a head-on crash into Styrofoam barriers. Remarkably, he climbed out of the car unscathed.

Johnson's career reached new heights when he joined Hendrick Motorsports. Legendary driver Jeff Gordon noticed Johnson's talent during the 2000 Busch season. Gordon convinced owner Rick Hendrick to sign Johnson for the Winston Cup Series. In 2002, Johnson began driving the No. 48 Chevrolet full-time. He immediately made an impact by earning his first career pole position at the Daytona 500. He also became the first rookie to sweep both races at Dover.

Between 2006 and 2010, Johnson achieved a feat never seen before in NASCAR. He won five consecutive Cup Series championships. This streak began with a victory in the 2006 Daytona 500. He followed this with titles in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. He eventually added a sixth championship in 2013 and a seventh in 2016.
