Known by the nickname "the King," he is one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history. He competed from 1958 to 1992 in the premier racing series. This series was originally called the NASCAR Grand National Series. It is now known as the NASCAR Cup Series. Petty's career is defined by unmatched consistency and an incredible number of victories. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers to ever compete on a track.

Racing was a family tradition for the Petty family. Richard was born in Level Cross, North Carolina, in 1937. His father, Lee Arnold Petty, was a professional NASCAR driver. Richard also had a brother, Maurice Petty, who became a well-known NASCAR personality. After graduating from Randleman High School, Richard worked for his father's company, Petty Enterprises. He began his professional racing career on July 18, 1958. His very first race was held at CNE Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1959, he earned the NASCAR Rookie of the Year award after several top-ten finishes.

Throughout his career, Petty mastered many different types of vehicles. In 1964, he drove a Plymouth with a powerful Hemi engine. He later drove the iconic Plymouth Superbird, which featured a shark nose and a large rear wing.

In the 1970s, he famously raced cars with a bright blue paint scheme. This color became part of a compromise with his sponsor, STP. He also drove Dodge Chargers, Oldsmobiles, and even a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

These different machines allowed him to remain competitive across many decades of changing technology.

Petty's statistical achievements are nearly unparalleled in motorsport. He was the first driver to win seven NASCAR Cup Series championships. He now shares this record with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. Petty holds the record for the most career wins with 200 victories.

He also won the Daytona 500 a record seven times. In 1967, he set a milestone by winning 27 races in a single season. This included a remarkable streak of ten consecutive wins. His career included 1,185 starts and 123 pole positions, which are starting spots at the front of the grid.

His career included moments of great drama and intense competition. In 1965, Petty participated in drag racing after a rule change affected Hemi engines. During a race at Southeastern Dragway, a crash occurred that resulted in the death of an eight-year-old boy and injuries to others. Petty and his team faced legal settlements following this accident. Later, in 1976, Petty was involved in a famous finish at the Daytona 500. He and driver David Pearson collided while racing for the lead. Both cars spun and hit the wall. Petty's engine stalled, and he finished in second place.

Petty's influence extends far beyond the racetrack. In 2010, he was part of the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He has also shared his persona with a wider audience through animation. He provided a voice for the character Strip "The King" Weathers in the Disney/Pixar films *Cars* and *Cars 3*. This character was partially based on Petty himself. He remains active in the sport today as a team ambassador for Legacy Motor Club. He also operates Petty's Garage, a shop for car restoration in Level Cross, North Carolina.

His legacy is preserved through various honors and institutions. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George H. W. Bush.
