Throughout his career, he became one of the most successful competitors in the NASCAR Cup Series. This series is the highest level of stock car racing in the United States. Waltrip is widely considered one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. He earned three Cup Series championships in 1981, 1982, and 1985. His massive success helped him become the first driver to earn over $10 million in career race winnings.

Waltrip's journey began with small engines and dirt tracks. He started racing go-karts when he was only twelve years old. By age sixteen, he entered his first stock car race. He and his father built a 1936 Chevrolet coupe for local dirt track racing. His first experience was difficult when he hit a wall and damaged the car.

However, he soon discovered that asphalt tracks suited his smooth driving style. He moved to Nashville to race at the Fairgrounds Speedway. There, he won two track championships in 1970 and 1973. He also used his public speaking skills to promote races on local television.

In 1972, Waltrip made the jump to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.

His first race was at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. He drove a 1969 Mercury Cyclone that he had purchased for $12,500. Although an engine failure ended his first race on lap 69, it marked the start of a long career. Early on, he competed against icons like Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough. He eventually joined the DiGard racing team in 1975. This move helped him transition from an owner-driver to a professional powerhouse.

Waltrip became a master of different types of racing venues. He dominated short tracks, such as Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway.
