Shaun White is a renowned American athlete who achieved professional status in both snowboarding and skateboarding. He is most famous for his dominance in the halfpipe, a massive U-shaped snow structure. White is a five-time Olympian and holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals won by a snowboarder. He also holds the world record for the most X Games gold medals. His career is defined by high-stakes competition and technical precision.

White's competitive style involves executing complex aerial maneuvers to earn high scores from judges. In the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, he performed a signature move called the Double McTwist 1260. He nicknamed this specific trick "The Tomahawk." This move helped him earn a record score of 48.4 out of a possible 50. During the 2018 Winter Olympics, he secured his third gold medal by landing back-to-back 1440s. This dramatic performance allowed him to overtake Ayumu Hirano of Japan by one full point.

His journey began with significant personal challenges in San Diego, California. Born on September 3, 1986, White was diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot. This is a congenital heart defect, which means he was born with it. He required two open-heart operations before he reached one year of age. Despite this, he spent his early years riding in the San Bernardino Mountains. His family often stayed in a van in resort parking lots to be near the snow.

White's professional path was shaped by early talent and mentorship. He began switching from skiing to snowboarding at age six. By age seven, he had already secured his first sponsorship. In skateboarding, he met the legendary Tony Hawk at a YMCA skate park in Encinitas. Hawk mentored the nine-year-old White and helped him become a professional skateboarder at age 16. White eventually became the first person to win both Summer and Winter X Games in different sports.

His statistics in competition are among the highest in action sports history. At the Winter X Games, White won a medal every year from 2002 through 2013. During that period, he earned 18 total medals, including 13 golds, 3 silvers, and 2 bronzes. In 2012, he became the first person to score a perfect 100 in the men's Snowboard SuperPipe. His success in the 2007 Burton US Open was also notable. He earned $100,000 as the Global Open Champion, along with $20,000 for first place in the halfpipe and $90,000 for third in slopestyle.

Beyond the slopes, White has built a diverse business and media empire. He has held endorsements with major brands like Red Bull, Oakley, and Target. In 2008, Forbes estimated his endorsement earnings reached $9 million. He has appeared in documentaries like *The White Album* and *First Descent*. He also released his own video game franchise, including *Shaun White Snowboarding*. White even ventured into music by playing guitar in the electronic rock band, the Bad Things.

Recently, White has focused on shaping the future of his sport. In 2024, he announced the creation of "The Snow League." His goal is to create a professional structure similar to traditional major sports. He wants riders to progress from amateur to college to professional levels. The league received $4.5 million in initial seed funding. By November 12, 2025, an additional $30 million in funding was added. The league also signed a multiyear media rights deal with NBC and Peacock.
