The X Games are a premier series of action sports competitions. These events showcase high-level skill in disciplines like skateboarding, BMX, and freestyle motocross. In the winter, the focus shifts to snow-based sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Athletes compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. They also play for prize money. Beyond the competition, the X Games function as a cultural festival. They feature live music performances and on-site DJs. Fans can also participate in interactive, family-friendly exhibitions and athlete autograph sessions.

Competition at the X Games often involves pushing the boundaries of physical possibility. Athletes attempt groundbreaking tricks that have never been performed before. For instance, skateboarder Tony Hawk famously landed a 900-degree spin in 1999. In the BMX category, Dave Mirra performed the first double backflip in competition during the year 2000.

Motocross athletes like Travis Pastrana have also achieved legendary status through high-scoring runs. Winter athletes contribute to this legacy as well. Shaun White performed a Double McTwist 1260 on a snowboard. Henrik Harlaut landed a first-of-its-kind nose-butter triple cork in Ski Big Air. These moments define the progression of action sports.

There are many distinct disciplines within the X Games. The summer events include various forms of BMX, such as BMX Freestyle, BMX Dirt, and BMX Park. Skateboarding is also a major component, with events like Skateboard Street and Skateboard Vert. Moto X features diverse categories, including Moto X Freestyle and Moto X Racing. The winter games consist of disciplines like Snowboarding Slopestyle and Ski Superpipe. Even esports have become a part of the lineup, featuring games like Rocket League and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This variety ensures a wide range of athletic talents are represented.

The history of the X Games began in the summer of 1995. The inaugural events were held in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island. The first Winter X Games debuted in 1997 at the Snow Summit ski resort in Big Bear Lake, California.

Over time, the ownership of the property changed. Originally founded by ESPN Inc., the X Games were sold in late 2022 to MSP Sports Capital. This private equity firm was co-founded by Jahm Najafi and Jeff Moorad. Despite this change, the events continue to air on ESPN and ABC networks.

Attendance and viewership have seen significant fluctuations and growth. In 1997, the first Winter X Games drew 38,000 spectators. While attendance dropped to 25,000 in 1998, it surged to a record 83,500 for the Winter X Games East Coast debut in 2000. The year 2002 was a major turning point for media coverage. It was the first time the X Games were televised live. This live broadcast, which included coverage by SportsCenter, saw viewership on ABC Sports, ESPN, and ESPN2 exceed the 2001 household average by 30%. To support this live coverage, organizers added nighttime competitions to the schedule.

The X Games have also expanded through global initiatives. In 2002, ESPN announced the X Games Global Championship. This featured six teams of top athletes grouped by their region of origin. In 2003, a special Global Championship was held in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and Whistler, British Columbia. Athletes from five continents competed across 11 different disciplines. The final team rankings placed the United States first, followed by Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America. Since then, the brand has expanded to cities like Barcelona, Munich, and Foz do Iguaçu. X Games Asia has also been held annually since 1998.

Technological and environmental considerations are integrated into the modern X Games. During the 2015 X Games Aspen, ESPN utilized camera drones to capture aerial views of the athletes. This marked the first time the network used drone technology for such coverage. The organizers also prioritize eco-friendly practices. They have implemented measures such as using biodiesel fuel in their vehicles. Additionally, they organize recycling campaigns to manage the environmental impact of the large crowds. These efforts reflect a modern approach to hosting massive global sporting events.
