He is primarily remembered as one of the greatest running backs in the history of professional football. Simpson played 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). His career included significant success as a player for the Buffalo Bills. However, his athletic legacy is inextricably linked to a highly publicized criminal trial. This trial involved the deaths of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

Simpson's journey toward athletic stardom began with significant physical and social challenges. Born in 1947 in San Francisco, he grew up in the Potrero Hill housing projects. As a young child, he suffered from rickets, a condition that required him to wear leg braces until age five. This condition resulted in a bowlegged stance. In his youth, he joined a street gang called the Persian Warriors and faced brief incarceration. His path changed after meeting baseball star Willie Mays, who encouraged him to avoid trouble. Simpson eventually focused his energy on sports at the Potrero Hill Recreation Center and Galileo High School.

His collegiate career at the University of Southern California (USC) established him as a national star.

Playing for the Trojans, Simpson was a dominant running back under coach John McKay. In 1967, he led the nation in rushing with 1,543 yards. He followed this in 1968 by rushing for 1,880 yards. During his senior year, he won the Heisman Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding player in college football. He also received the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award. Beyond football, Simpson was an elite track athlete. In 1967, he helped his relay quartet break the world record for the 4 × 110-yard relay with a time of 38.6 seconds.

Simpson entered the NFL in 1969 when the Buffalo Bills selected him first overall in the draft.

His early professional years were difficult because coaches did not initially build the offense around him. This changed when coach Lou Saban made Simpson the centerpiece of the team. In 1973, Simpson achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season. He finished that season with 2,003 rushing yards in just 14 games. This performance earned him the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He also broke the previous single-season rushing record held by Jim Brown.

Throughout his NFL career, Simpson maintained a high level of statistical dominance. He led the league in rushing yards four different times. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and named a first-team All-Pro for five consecutive years from 1972 to 1976.

He also holds the record for the highest single-season yards-per-game average at 143.1 yards. His accomplishments led to his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. After retiring from football in 1979, he transitioned into acting and media. He appeared in the Naked Gun film franchise and served as a spokesman for companies like Hertz.

In June 1994, Simpson's life changed due to serious criminal charges. He was accused of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles.

The subsequent eight-month murder trial became a massive international media event. The case highlighted deep racial divisions within the United States. In October 1995, a jury acquitted Simpson of the murder charges. However, three years later, a civil suit brought by the victims' families found him liable for the deaths. He was ordered to pay a $33.5 million judgment, though he paid very little of that amount.

Simpson faced further legal issues later in life. In 2007, he was arrested in Las Vegas and charged with armed robbery and kidnapping.

He was convicted of these crimes in 2008 and sentenced to 33 years in prison. He served his time at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada. After being paroled and released in 2017, he lived in Florida and Nevada. Orenthal James Simpson died in April 2024. His life remains a complex study of extreme athletic achievement and intense legal controversy.
