His impact on sports and society was profound and lasting.

In fact, he averaged 5.22 yards per carry throughout his career. This high average shows how much ground he gained every time he touched the ball. He was the only player in NFL history to average over 100 rushing yards per game for an entire career.

Brown's athletic success spanned several different sports and levels of competition. In college, he played for the Syracuse Orangemen. He was an All-American in both football and lacrosse. He also excelled in basketball, track and field, and baseball.

In high school, he earned 13 varsity letters across these various activities. He was even scouted by the New York Yankees for professional baseball. In lacrosse, he was so dominant that rules were once changed. The rules required players to keep their sticks in constant motion while carrying the ball. This change was made because of his skill in the game.

Brown's journey began in St. Simons Island, Georgia. He later moved to Manhasset, New York, for high school. His path to Syracuse University was difficult due to the racial climate of the time.

He was the only African-American player on the football team during his freshman year in 1953. He faced racist taunts and was treated differently than his white teammates. He was housed in a non-athlete dormitory and faced restrictions on his social life. Despite these hardships, he became a consensus first-team All-American by his senior year. He even finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, a major award for college players.

In the NFL, Brown's statistical achievements were nearly unmatched.
