His career broke significant racial barriers in the entertainment industry. He became a symbol of strength through his leading roles. Poitier was one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's Golden Age. His work helped change how Black men were portrayed on screen. He moved beyond simple roles to demand substantive characters. This shift influenced both the film industry and American culture.

Poitier's path to stardom required immense discipline and personal growth. After moving to New York City at age sixteen, he worked as a dishwasher. He initially struggled to read scripts fluently during auditions. An elderly waiter helped him practice reading newspapers every night. Poitier also worked for six months to refine his speech. He modeled his new accent after the radio personality Norman Brokenshire. This dedication allowed him to transition from theater to major film roles.

His early life was marked by both struggle and unexpected beginnings. He was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida. His parents were Afro-Bahamian farmers from Cat Island. They were in Miami to sell produce to wholesalers. Poitier was born two months premature and was not expected to survive. His parents remained in Miami for three months to nurse him. Growing up in the Bahamas, he eventually moved to Nassau. There, he experienced modern technologies like electricity and motion pictures.

Poitier's film career reached several historic milestones during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1958, he starred in The Defiant Ones. This role made him the first African American nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. In 1964, he won the Academy Award for Lilies of the Field.
