Newman's journey into acting began with dedicated study and practice. He first showed an interest in theater as a child in Ohio. At age seven, he played a court jester in a school production. By age ten, he was performing at the Cleveland Play House.

After high school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in drama and economics from Kenyon College in 1949. He then toured with summer stock companies to develop his skills. Later, he attended the Yale School of Drama and studied under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.

Before his rise to stardom, Newman served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific theater. Initially, he enrolled in a pilot training program at Yale University. However, he was removed from the program after a diagnosis of colorblindness.

He later served as a radioman and a turret gunner in an Avenger torpedo bomber. In 1945, his unit was assigned to an aircraft carrier near Okinawa. Shortly after, a kamikaze attack hit the vessel, killing many crew members. Newman survived this event, which some believe influenced the emotional depth of his later acting.

Newman's professional career moved from the Broadway stage to Hollywood film sets. He made his Broadway debut in the 1953 production of Picnic.
