He is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the National Football League (NFL). Most fans and historians remember him for his incredible skill and his nickname, "Sweetness." This nickname may have described his personality or his graceful athletic style. It might even have been an ironic name for his aggressive playing style. Payton's impact on the sport remains significant today through various awards and honors.

As a running back, Payton's primary responsibility was to carry the football and run through the opposing team's defense. This action is known as rushing. Payton was an exceptionally prolific rusher who achieved massive yardage totals. He rushed for at least 1,200 yards in 10 of his 13 professional seasons. He also excelled at catching passes, finishing his career with 492 receptions for 4,538 yards. Remarkably, he even threw eight career touchdown passes. His versatility made him a constant threat on the field.

Payton's journey began in Mississippi, where he was a multi-talented athlete. At John J. Jefferson High School, he participated in track, basketball, and baseball. He also played drums in the school marching band and sang in the choir. When he began playing football as a junior, he had instant success. On his very first high-school carry, he ran 65 yards for a touchdown. He eventually earned honors on the Mississippi all-state team. His athletic success helped ease local tensions during a period of school desegregation.

After high school, Payton attended Jackson State University to play for the Tigers. He chose this historically black college and NAIA program to play alongside his brother, Eddie. While at Jackson State, he rushed for 3,600 yards. He set a school record with 65 career rushing touchdowns. In 1973 and 1974, he was named the Black College Player of the Year. He was also selected for the All-American Team. These collegiate achievements prepared him for the professional level.

Payton entered the NFL in 1975 as the fourth overall pick in the draft. He played his entire professional career with the Chicago Bears.

His early years showed rapid growth and improvement. In 1977, he won the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. During that same season, he set a then-record with 275 rushing yards in a single game against the Minnesota Vikings. He achieved this feat despite suffering from a 101-degree fever and the flu.

On October 7, 1984, Payton reached a major milestone against the New Orleans Saints. He broke Jim Brown's long-standing career rushing record of 12,312 yards.

By the time he retired after the 1987 season, he had rushed for 16,726 yards. He also scored 110 rushing touchdowns. In 1985, he helped lead the Chicago Bears to a victory in Super Bowl XX. Although he did not score a touchdown in that specific game, his presence drew multiple defenders. This allowed his teammates to find more space to succeed.

Payton's excellence earned him many prestigious honors. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. The Chicago Bears retired his jersey number, 34, to honor his service. His legacy continues through the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
