Robert Pershing Wadlow was a man of unprecedented physical stature. He is recognized as the tallest person in recorded history for whom irrefutable evidence exists. Known as the Alton Giant or the Giant of Illinois, he lived in Alton, Illinois.

Wadlow was born on February 22, 1918, to Harold Franklin and Addie May Wadlow. He was the eldest of five children in his family. His life was defined by a continuous and extraordinary growth process.

His extreme height was caused by a medical condition in his pituitary gland. This gland experienced hypertrophy, which means it grew larger than normal. This enlargement caused the gland to produce an abnormally high level of human growth hormone, or HGH. HGH is the chemical signal that tells the body to grow. Because of this constant supply of hormone, Wadlow continued to grow well into his adult years. Doctors first diagnosed this condition when he was twelve years old. At that time, corrective surgery was considered too dangerous to attempt.

Wadlow's growth was visible from a very young age. By age eight, he was already taller than his father. During his elementary school years, he required a specially made desk. Despite his size, he was remarkably strong during his youth. At age nine, he was strong enough to carry his father up the stairs. He attended Alton High School and graduated in 1936. Following graduation, he enrolled in Shurtleff College to study law.

As an adult, Wadlow became a public figure through various professional engagements. In 1936, he participated in a tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He appeared in the center ring at Madison Square Garden and the Boston Garden. However, he refused to be treated as a circus sideshow performer. He insisted on wearing his everyday clothes rather than circus costumes like top hats and tails. In 1938, he began a promotional tour for the International Shoe Company. He viewed his public appearances as work in advertising rather than exhibition.

Living with such a large body presented many physical challenges. Wadlow required leg braces to assist him with walking. He also experienced a lack of sensation in his legs and feet. Despite these difficulties, he chose never to use a wheelchair. His feet were also exceptionally large, requiring specialized footwear. A comparison shows his US size 37 AA shoe next to a standard US size 12. This illustrates the massive scale of his physical dimensions.

Wadlow's life ended prematurely at the age of 22. On June 27, 1940, doctors measured him at a height of 8 feet 11.73 inches. Just weeks later, a medical complication occurred during a festival in Michigan. A faulty leg brace irritated his ankle and caused an infection. Although doctors provided a blood transfusion and surgery, his condition worsened. He passed away in his sleep on July 15, 1940. His massive coffin weighed over 1,000 pounds and required twenty people to move.

The legacy of Robert Wadlow remains preserved in several ways. He is recognized as one of the Guinness World Records ICONS of 2025. In 1986, a life-size statue was erected in Alton, Illinois. This statue stands opposite the Alton Museum of History and Art. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in his hometown. His life serves as a significant case study in the study of human growth and endocrinology.
