He insisted on wearing his everyday clothes rather than circus costumes like top hats and tails. In 1938, he began a promotional tour for the International Shoe Company. He viewed his public appearances as work in advertising rather than exhibition.

Living with such a large body presented many physical challenges. Wadlow required leg braces to assist him with walking. He also experienced a lack of sensation in his legs and feet. Despite these difficulties, he chose never to use a wheelchair. His feet were also exceptionally large, requiring specialized footwear.
