Robert Wadlow was a man of incredible size. He is known as the tallest person in recorded history with irrefutable evidence. People called him the Alton Giant or the Giant of Illinois. He lived in the small city of Alton, Illinois.

He was born on February 22, 1918. Robert was the oldest of five children. His parents were Harold Franklin and Addie May Wadlow.

His extreme height happened because of his pituitary gland. This is a small part of the body. The gland had a condition called hypertrophy. This means it grew larger than normal. Because of this, his body made too much human growth hormone, or HGH. This hormone tells the body to grow.

This process caused him to keep growing even as an adult. Doctors first found this problem when he was twelve years old.

Robert grew very fast during his childhood. He was already taller than his father by age eight. In elementary school, his teachers had to make a special desk for him. He was very strong as a young boy. At age nine, he was strong enough to carry his father up the stairs.

He graduated from Alton High School in 1936. He then went to Shurtleff College to study law.

As an adult, Robert was a well-known person. He went on a tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus in 1936. He also worked with the International Shoe Company starting in 1938. He did not want to be a circus sideshow act. Instead, he preferred to wear his everyday clothes for advertising.

He used leg braces to help him walk. He had very little feeling in his feet and legs. However, he never used a wheelchair.

Robert's life ended when he was only 22 years old. On June 27, 1940, he was measured at 8 feet 11.73 inches tall. He died on July 15, 1940, after an infection in his ankle. A faulty brace had caused the problem during a festival.
