He is known to history for his severe physical deformities. These changes began when he was very young. By the age of five, his skin became thick and lumpy.

His lips swelled, and a bony lump grew on his forehead. His arms and feet also became much larger than normal. He lived a life that was often very difficult and lonely.

His body worked in a way that made daily tasks hard. Because his head was so heavy, he could not sleep lying down. If he tried to lie flat, he risked breaking his neck. Instead, he had to sleep sitting up with his head resting on his knees.

His physical changes also made it hard for him to speak clearly. This made it difficult for him to work as a salesman. He even had surgery in 1882 to remove a large mass from his mouth. This operation was done by a doctor named Clement Frederick Bryan.

Merrick's early life was filled with many sad changes. His mother, Mary Jane, died from illness in 1873.
