He was a sculptor, a letter cutter, and a printmaker. He also designed typefaces, which are special styles of lettering. People often call him a genius of craftsmanship.

However, his life is also very controversial. This is because he was known to have abused his own daughters and his pet dog. While his art is highly valued, these facts make his history difficult to discuss.

Gill had a very specific way of working. He preferred using his hands instead of using big machines.

As a sculptor, he did not use models to plan his work. Instead, he carved directly into the stone to make his final shapes. He also used wood-engraving to make art for books. This meant he could create beautiful pictures and text at the same time. He spent much of his life teaching others these manual skills. He wanted people to value the work of their own hands.

Eric Gill was born in 1882 in Brighton, England.

He grew up in Chichester and studied at a local art school. In 1900, he moved to London to train as an architect. He did not stay an architect for long, though. He took classes in stonemasonry and calligraphy instead. He eventually became a professional letter cutter and a monumental mason. He married Ethel Hester Moore in 1904, and they had three daughters. He became a Roman Catholic in 1913 after visiting a monastery.

Throughout his life, Gill lived and worked in several important places. He started a craft community in Ditchling, Sussex.

Later, he moved to the Black Mountains in Wales to live at Capel-y-ffin. This quiet place helped him create famous works like the sculpture *Mankind*. He also designed the famous Gill Sans typeface. In his later years, he moved to Buckinghamshire. There, he created large sculptures for big buildings in London.

Many of the things Gill made are still part of our world today. You might see his lettering styles in books or on signs.

His sculptures can still be found on important buildings in London. He was a very busy man who wrote about 300 different things. He wrote books and pamphlets about religion and society. He often spoke out against the use of modern machines. Even though he died in 1940, his many works remain for people to study.
