He was a poet, a collector, and a stonemason by trade. He wanted to protect the traditions of his home in Glamorgan. He believed these traditions had survived many hard times in history. Iolo worked hard to keep Welsh literature and customs alive. His life was full of many different roles and ideas.

To help his cause, Iolo created many things that were not real. These are called forgeries. He wrote poems and stories that he claimed were very old. He even made a special way to write called Coelbren y Beirdd. This Bardic Alphabet used 20 main letters and 20 extra symbols.

These symbols were shown in a wooden frame called a peithynen. He used these tools to make his work look ancient. He wanted people to see the deep roots of Welsh culture.

Iolo's journey began in the village of Flemingston in Wales. He was born in 1747 near Llancarfan. He learned to write poetry from talented poets like Siôn Bradford. In 1773, he moved to the big city of London. There, he met many people who loved Welsh books. He returned to Wales in 1777 and tried to be a farmer. However, he was not successful at farming. He spent much of his time making his first forgeries then.

Iolo did many important things during his life. In 1792, he started a group called the Gorsedd. This is a community of Welsh bards. He held the first ceremony at Primrose Hill in London. He also worked on a large book called The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales. This collection was published between 1801 and 1807. It included many old stories and some of his own inventions. His son, Taliesin, later collected his papers into 26 volumes.

Even though he made things up, Iolo had a huge impact. His ideas helped start a movement called neo-Druidism. Many people still use his "Druid's Prayer" in ceremonies today. A school in Cowbridge is named Ysgol Iolo Morganwg in his honor. In 1926, a plaque was put up to remember him.
